IN THE STUDIO WITH JENNY WALTON

IN THE STUDIO WITH JENNY WALTON

Jenny Walton, illustrator, designer, and brand ambassador, lives in New York City with her husband, Scott, and their two dogs, Baffi and Charlie.

HOW DID YOU FIRST BECOME ACQUAINTED WITH JONATHAN COHEN?

He ruthlessly stole our star intern @ The Sartorialist! ;) Maybe it didn’t go exactly that way, but I did meet him and become acquainted with the brand through Deanna who was interning for my husband at the time and was also working with Jonathan Cohen (and who helped develop The Studio so shout out to Deanna!!)

FOR YOUR PHOTOSHOOT WITH THE STUDIO, YOU HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO STYLE YOUR OWN LOOK. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THE PARTICULAR OUTFIT YOU WERE PHOTOGRAPHED IN?

I decided to take on my upper east side alter ego and wear a little skirt suit which felt appropriate for hanging with the pups. I also loved that the fabric was leftover and was able to be saved from the landfill.

THE FASHION INDUSTRY IS CHANGING AT SUCH A RAPID PACE. WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES FOR THE FUTURE OF FASHION? ADDITIONALLY, WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE MOST EXCITING OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE FUTURE OF FASHION?

I think the biggest challenge will be the whole industry changing on the scale that it needs too. I think creating a circular system where all materials can be broken back down and turned into new garments will be the most important. Because I think fashion is a wonderful thing and I wouldn’t want it to stop completely, just find a way of reusing materials or developing new materials that can be broken down and reworked into new designs.

YOU WEAR SO MANY HATS: INFLUENCER, FASHION ILLUSTRATOR, STREET STYLE STAR, DESIGNER, DOG MOM… HOW DO YOU BALANCE ALL OF THESE ROLES? DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE ROLE?

My favorite role right now is designer and working on jewelry pieces, my brand identity, packaging, etc. It’s so fun to create this unique brand identity and share that idea with customers and see who connects with it.

THE TITLE “INFLUENCER” IS QUITE AMBIGUOUS. WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE BIGGEST INFLUENCE ON YOUR FOLLOWERS?

I hope my biggest influence is getting people to appreciate beauty around them maybe in unexpected ways like with my #colorpaletting or #mundane posts. I also hope I am able to help popularize the use of second hand and vintage.

YOU SHARE A LOT ABOUT YOUR LOVE OF VINTAGE. WHAT DRAWS YOU TO VINTAGE CLOTHING?

I love vintage because I love past decades, the glamour and the color and I love bringing that forward with really beautiful pieces.

YOU RECENTLY LAUNCHED YOUR OWN JEWELRY AND ACCESSORIES ON YOUR WEBSITE. WHAT INSPIRED THE PRODUCTS AND WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO GO DIRECT-TO-CONSUMER? WHAT ARE YOUR AMBITIONS FOR YOUR BRAND?

The pieces are inspired by vintage jewelry that I’ve collected throughout my life and been inspired by. I’m always loving a 1950/60s moment so that’s the idea. Even the script of my “Jenny Walton” logo was inspired by a vintage stockings package from the 1950s and was hand drawn by myself. My ambitions for the brand are to create beautiful thoughtful pieces that bring people a lot of happiness.

YOU HAVE BEEN SUCH AN ADVOCATE FOR SUSTAINABILITY IN AND OUT FASHION, HOW WOULD YOU ADVISE AN INDIVIDUAL OR A BRAND ON TACKLING THE ISSUE? WHAT DO YOU THINK IS AN IMPORTANT FIRST STEP?

I think the first step is to look at all of your day to day actions and cutdown wherever possible. It’s also equally important to look at who you’re voting for and make it a priority that you support someone who acknowledges sustainability issues and is working to help solve them.

THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION THAT EVERYONE WANTS TO KNOW…DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE DOG CHILD, CHARLIE OR BAFFI? SOPHIES CHOICE!

Hahaha. A lot of people have been telling me that Baffi is their favorite lately, but I think that’s just because she’s the newest. Charlie is the OG though…. (I wanted a beagle since I was a kid and she’s my first dog ever). The fact that they get along so well and are best friends however (not that they have any choice) makes them such a package deal that I don’t have to choose thankfully!

WHY IS NATURAL SKINCARE AND MAKEUP IMPORTANT TO YOU? DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE INIKA PRODUCT?

I have sensitive skin so natural skincare and makeup is very important to me. My favorite was the long lash vegan mascara.
