Stephanie Mark, Co-Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Coveteur, lives in New York City.
HOW DID YOU FIRST BECOME ACQUAINTED WITH JONATHAN COHEN?
I was introduced to both Sarah and Jonathan during a visit to their studio about 3 years ago. I INSTANTLY fell in love with both of them, and obviously the clothes as well.
FOR YOUR PHOTOSHOOT WITH THE STUDIO, YOU HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO STYLE YOUR OWN LOOK. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THE PARTICULAR OUTFIT YOU WERE PHOTOGRAPHED IN?
The dress I wore has a special place in my heart, because it is named after ME! Jonathan and Sarah were generous enough to design the dress of my dreams for the welcome party the night before my wedding. It was everything I could have hoped for and the runway version is a shorter brightly colored version of the one I wore.
THE FASHION INDUSTRY IS CHANGING AT SUCH A RAPID PACE. WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGES FOR THE FUTURE OF FASHION? ADDITIONALLY, WHAT DO YOU SEE AS THE MOST EXCITING OPPORTUNITIES FOR THE FUTURE OF FASHION?
The biggest challenge for the future of fashion (in my opinion) is how you stay relevant and different when there are so many new brands born every day. Stores are flooded with a ton of merchandise and it will be interesting to see how designers find ways to stand out and keep continued brand loyalty from customers.
The most exciting opportunity for fashion is sustainability. I think there are really great ways to build community around sustainability and I am hopeful that in the future advocating for the environment in fashion will bring people together.
WHEN YOU STARTED COVETEUR, WHAT WAS YOUR AMBITION AND VISION FOR THE BUSINESS? HOW HAS THAT VISION CHANGED OVER THE YEARS?
Coveteur started as a passion project so our initial vision was just to have people come to the site at all! Shortly after the site launched our goal was to have all of our content have an angle that was exclusive to us, this could range from our photography, to the talent we had on the site, to exclusive quotes and beyond.
COVETEUR IS KNOWN FOR ITS CLOSET PROFILES. WHAT DO YOU FIND MOST INTERESTING OR INSPIRING ABOUT LOOKING INTO PEOPLE’S CLOSETS?
The most inspiring part about going into people’s closets is that everyone is just so nice. It sounds cheesy but going into the homes of people you admire and look up to and having them be so welcoming and encouraging inspires us to keep doing bigger and better things.
YOUR COMPANY HAS GROWN QUICKLY. WHAT ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT LESSONS YOU’VE HAD TO LEARN DURING THE RAPID EXPANSION?
No one is an overnight success! And hiring key people you can rely on is necessary; no one can do everything themselves and finding people who can help you on your weak points is crucial for success and growth.
WHAT DO YOU DO FOR YOURSELF TO STAY SANE WITH YOUR BUSY SCHEDULE?
It’s a fine balance of working out and eating healthy combined with watching Netflix and not leaving my apartment (fine, bed) for an unacceptable amount of hours.
COVETEUR STARTED AS A PASSION PROJECT THAT HAS BECOME A MEDIA EMPIRE. DO YOU HAVE ANY GUIDANCE FOR THOSE SEEKING TO TURN THEIR PASSIONS INTO VIABLE BUSINESSES?
Yes - just starting is the key! By just going out and starting to make your passion project a reality you are way ahead of most.
YOU STARTED YOUR BUSINESS WITH YOUR FRIEND AND CO-FOUNDER JAKE ROSENBERG. WE ARE ALSO A DUO OF CO-FOUNDERS, SO WE ARE ALWAYS INTERESTED IN HEARING ABOUT HOW OTHER BUSINESS PARTNERS MANAGE THEIR COMPANIES. HOW ARE YOUR ROLES DIVIDED?
Thankfully, Jake and I have different strengths and that allows us to both run the business without stepping on each other’s toes and we can able to compliment one another. I focus more on business development and brand partnerships while Jake is the creative director and is always on set and had a heavy hand in dictating how our site, social and all outward facing product looks. Together, we tackle items like hiring, brand vision, roadmap and any pressing day to day issues.
WHY IS NATURAL SKINCARE AND MAKEUP IMPORTANT TO YOU?
You are what you eat - and put on your skin!
DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE INIKA PRODUCT? (FROM THE PRODUCTS USED AT THE SHOOT)
I loved the blush - I am always in search of the perfect color and this one hit the mark.
